In discussing it with sjoerd a bit, we've come to think that it might be nicer
if the list of properties for 'channel-properties' is provided by a vfunc so
that subclasses don't need to override the 'channel-properties' property, since
that seems potentially a bit fragile.  I need to ponder the design options
there a bit.
