Ok, additional information:

on some forum I have found someone suggesting to launch this in console: 
HAZE_PERSIST=1 HAZE_DEBUG=all /usr/lib/telepathy/telepathy-haze 

and then to try to log in to see debug messages.

So I have tried it and guess what... Everything worked and I can even access
advanced settings.
However, when I then stop the above command, I'm back at where I was, nothing
works and advanced settings window is empty. 
That's pretty strange, but I assume this might give an idea about what's wrong.
