You shouldn't run Empathy as root. First please install
telepathy-mission-control-5-dbg then do the following:

- Quit Empathy
- killall mission-control-5
- export MC_DEBUG=5
- gdb /usr/lib/telepathy/mission-control-5
- Once it's loaded hit 'r' in gdb
- Start empathy
- Once it crashes in MC: 'bt full' in gdb
