If we were to use some non-XMPP method to modify friends lists, I think it
would be the official API for this:
https://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/api/FriendList/

But I don't really think this should fall under the purview of Gabble. Perhaps
libsocialweb would be a better home, since it already speaks to Facebook using
their REST API.
