I suspect telepathy-idle is applying the RFC's nickname rules strictly, whereas
your bouncer is deliberately using an invalid nick to ensure that it doesn't
collide with real nicknames on a real IRC network. We had the same problem with
bip's "-bip" pseudo-user.
