I also have a proof-of-concept branch for Empathy's GOA backend, which I think
demonstrates that for something that simple, it's entirely feasible to support
both 5.16 and 5.18:

so I don't think merging this needs to be blocked by implementations in Empathy
or telepathy-ring.

For the more complex case of the UOA backend (also in Empathy), Xavier
mentioned that he had an implementation.
