The distinction being requested is between "petnames" and "nicknames" as
defined by <http://www.skyhunter.com/marcs/petnames/IntroPetNames.html>,
although we'd rather not have the name Petnames appear in our API.
This is also required if we want to follow
http://www.xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0165.html "Best Practices to Discourage JID
Mimicking", or its (possibly unwritten) equivalent on other protocols.

Pidgin | private alias | public alias
Other possibilities for the "my name for them" column include "friendly name"
(suggested by Rob) or "appointed alias" (suggested in #pidgin).
