[Telepathy] Received SMSs not announced in Empathy UI?

I've appended the log from Empathy below.  It's only 9K, so I hope

There is an incoming SMS, "ghjfjfgjffghf", from 22:20:42.287842
onwards.  (I thought this log covered an incoming voice call too, but it
appears not.)

I believe that's right: my UI doesn't appear to have a status area.

That's right too - but this is intentional, because the nature of SMSs
is that they are unsolicited and could come from people who are not
(yet) in my contacts list.  I'd still like to see those SMSs, of course.

Also I tried adding a Contact, and couldn't.  I selected "Chat", "Add
Contact..." from the menu: the "New Contact" dialog appears, but there
is no text in the Account drop down.  If I click the drop down arrow, I
see "tel Account", but greyed out.  If I type something into the
Identifier and Alias fields, and click "Add", I don't then see that
contact in the main UI.

I don't have that option.  I think the closest similar thing is "Enable
bubble notifications", but it makes no difference if I turn that off.

No - as already mentioned above.
