Peregrine Open Source Project Announced:
Real-time Communication Client based on standard Qt APIs and
Telepathy for MeeGo
------------------------------------------------------------------
November 04, 2010 - basysKom announces Peregrine, the crossplatform real-time
communication client that integrates all daily needed communication services
for VoIP, Video and Chat in one solution! Peregrine is based on Qt and
Telepathy with MeeGo as its reference platform.
Real-time communication like messaging, VoIP, chat and other services are used
by millions of people on a daily basis. Normally users need different
solutions to use the full set of communication services available in the
internet.
We at basysKom decided to develop a Messenger that provides telephony and
instant messaging unified in one solution. We want to create a new fully
integrated and lightweight solution, that works cross-platform and also
supports devices with limited resources, like tablets and mobile phones.
The result is Peregrine, a real-time communication client that integrates IM
and VoIP features and is based on MeeGo Touch and Telepathy-Qt4.
Users benefit from an intuitive touchscreen interface when using communication
services like Text, VoIP and Video Call. Friends and their various contact
details are managed comfortably by combining different channels to one single
contact. Especially the „Open Channel“ helps users identify, which contacts
are available and through which channel to get in contact with. Multiple calls
and chats can be quickly established and managed. Contacts are clearly
arranged in the „Buddy list“ and are accessible by a single click.
We have chosen MeeGo as our reference platform to enable Peregrine on modern
emerging devices, including all possible communication services in one single
application. Peregrine uses Qt‘s interview framework to separate application
logic from the actual user interface. This way the graphical user interface
(GUI) can easily be branded or adapted to new platforms, workflows, designs
and device needs.
The initial release of Peregrine was contributed by basyskom GmbH and released
as an open source project with OSI compliant license. We decided to open the
development of Peregrine and contribute it to the public to support the Nokia
Qt and MeeGo communities and others. The Peregrine project source is published
at http://gitorious.org/peregrine
