Does its JID have a node part (i.e. "foo at example.com") or is it just a
domain part (i.e. "example.com")?

I assume the latter. Gabble (the XMPP backend for Telepathy used by
Empathy) doesn't support receiving or sending messages to JIDs without a
node part.
