Respect TMPDIR and use dot-files as socket paths

The attached patch adds support for TMPDIR. Further I've prepended dots to the
names for the unix domain sockets, so that these are "hidden" by default. Many
other applications hide sockets this way so these don't clutter up directory
listings.
