Thanks again. Very helpful.

I changed my /etc/apt/sources.list, and installed scim 
0.99.8-0pre1 and scim-chinese 0.4.2-0pre1. Now I can easily 
switch to Smart Pinyin input, and toggle between English and 
jianti, fanti, etc. within Gnome apps on Deb sid.
