I have never personaly tried kahakai. I could not get it work under
FreeBSD. In which way is kahakai more customizable?

Aegis is not a for of waimea. Developers of kahakai didn't like the code
of waimea. Some guy from them said to me it is not "clean" and they want
a perfect WM. So he said, it is easier for them to start from nothing
than to "clean up" waimea's code. But they did not start from nothing,
they rather started with some lightweight WM with clean code. So as far
as I remember, their main objective is to have clean software design.
