[waimea] problem with the autogen.sh

hi,

i'm having trouble compiling waimea from CVS source.  everytime i 
attempt to do the first step in the INSTALL file (running autogen.sh) it 
fails with this error:

ppk at kalahari waimea $ ./autogen.sh
./autogen.sh:   Note: `./configure' will be run with no arguments.
                If you wish to pass any to it, please specify them on the
                `./autogen.sh' command line.

./autogen.sh: running `aclocal'
./autogen.sh: running `autoheader'
./autogen.sh: running `automake --add-missing'
./autogen.sh: running `autoconf'
./autogen.sh: running `./configure --enable-maintainer-mode'
loading cache ./config.cache
configure: error: can not run


i managed to successfully compile it once when i found a webpage that 
said some other arguments and it worked fine.  BUT i lost that page and 
can't find it again!

anybody help?
