ok, one of the problems is: the x220's advertised range is different to what it
actually has. This is quite common with synaptics touchpads before the T440
series touchpads and libinput doesn't cater for that (not sure how we could
make this generic). As a result the button sizes are huge and misplaced which
is why a large part of the touchpad is occupied by software buttons.

I filed this one with systemd:
https://github.com/systemd/systemd/pull/3397

With this the buttons are just over 6mm high and range in from the bottom edge
of the touchpad. While the basic problem remains the same (and we won't fix
this, no movement in the button areas is required, otherwise you can't click
without moving the cursor) it should not be an issue anymore, or at least not
much of an issue anymore, once the axis ranges are correct.
