So here's the behaviour I observe:-

1. Bringing pen in and out of proximity gives no output.

2. Pressing buttons gives no output.

3. Pressing buttons WHILE PEN IS IN PROXIMITY gives output.

Seems like the buttons are being treated similarly to the buttons on the pen.
This applies for all 8 buttons.
