I've been trying

libinput:name:TPPS/2 IBM
TrackPoint:dmi:bvn*:bvr*:bd*:svnLENOVO:pn*:pvrThinkPadT450s:*
  LIBINPUT_ATTR_TRACKPOINT_RANGE=35

and it's a bit hard to say ("it's not what I'm used to!"), but after a few
minutes of waving my pointer around it does tentatively seem somewhat better?
