OK - thanks to both of you for the very helpful comments.  I had no idea that
this could actually be key repeat triggering.

For the moment I've turned off key repeating entirely.  We'll see if that
solves the problem.  If it does, that's a really easy fix since I can live
without key repeating.  If I still see bouncing keys, I'll try to gather
evidence using evemu-record as Peter suggested.
