Could you provide a log or a backtrace of Xwayland when it crashes? Reason I'm asking is because icons on desktop in GNOME is not supported in Wayland will never be (see [1]). It is (was? see [2]) implemented in Nautilus, but it cannot work under Wayland. It used to crash Nautilus if enabled on Wayland (which could be the problem, but then it's not Xwayland crashing) and it should be fixed by now [3]. Here (using GNOME 3.20 on F24), enabling icons on the desktop doesn't crash anything.
