After restarting I was not immediately able to trigger it, but instead brought gnome-shell down with an assertion (g_malloc failed to allocate 1.8x10^19 bytes). Working down the stack a few frames it looked like it was trying to use an invalid structure, presumably in memory which had already been freed.
