<pre>right, in that case what's likely is that we're hitting the issue noted in the
commit message. would be useful to add some printfs to make sure though. if
that's the case we'll have to throw out the idea of making the hysteresis apply
across both axes at the same time. Or at least need someone with a better idea
than my attempts so far.</pre>
