That does nothing for people who don't think VTE is a wonderful piece of work. Those customers are probably using xterm or rxvt today. To keep those customers, they will want a migration path to a Wayland native implementation.
I had actually started looking at that over the Christmas holiday just before Callum made his announcement.
That said, please feel free to split VTE into model/view components.
