I'm going to say, until somebody can provide me with evidence otherwise,
that under X, wayland works:
With Nouveau all the way back to NV04, the Riva TNT, released in 1998.
With open source AMD/ATI drivers, back to the Radeon 7200, released in
2000.
For Intel, it looks like the open source driver works back to the i965,
released in 2006. Haven't looked into other drivers.
Based on: http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/CodeNames and
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RadeonDriver and
http://intellinuxgraphics.org/documentation.html
And somebody in #nouveau agreeing with my assessment for nouveau.
