Indian script : unicode font standard : is it ttf or otf

Indian scripts are typically standardized as in OTF and most OSes are
designed for ttf.
Is wayland affected by this choice?
Does it have builtin binding for ttf.
Typically the graphics packages are having their rendering libraries
assuming ttf ( even for unicode)
What happnes then.
In X.org and MSWindows , thuis appears to be an issue due to which
localization has been difficult
