I tried this and found out that the distributed version of cairo with
Ubuntu 12.04 (cairo 1.10.2?) has a bug that causes the Xserver windows
to have the gradient errors I was complaining about. If I use the git
version of cairo the xserver windows look fine.

So it seems best to leave the instructions in there so that the newer
cairo without this bug is used.
