Oh, in fact there would be room for quite much of splitting here, like
the <pre>-boxing and adding $ to commands could be a separate patch,
and therefore much easier to get in while the rest may still be
discussed.

Changes are to be split into patches based on the logical context or
meaning, not so much by files.
