Sure, you need to pick a compositor first, as Wayland itself is
nothing you can run per se (think about HTTP for instance).

If you choose Weston, it can run on a VT in a few different ways,
and it can also run as an X11 application in a window so if you want
to run inside your X session, that is possible too.

Running it on a VT however is how it is meant to be experienced,
since running on X11 lacks some display and input features.

There should be no problem running a Wayland compositor in one VT
while your X session is on another.
