distcheck uses AM_DISTCHECK_CONFIGURE_FLAGS (if set in the
Makefile.am) to override the defaults.
Plus the user can further tweak things via the non AM_ version. For example

DISTCHECK_CONFIGURE_FLAGS="--disable-xwayland-test" make distcheck
