Without HDR the only thing in between might be a (time based)
dithering step (in a lot of cases the actual display is 6bit but
controlled by 8bits) at least for "normal" HW, LUT boxes and similar
are only found in expensive HW. This will change of course with HDR
hardware but not sure in what way.

Maybe true and it might be a good idea to standardize the size of the
LUT that wayland works with anyway. Something like 2^12 elements in
u0.16 fixed point LE (I think since we are only interested in 0.0
(min) to 1.0 (max) floating point leaves to much in the table) ? A
calibrator might still want to know certain quantization steps but
that doesn't mean we can't standardize the LUT (at least from this
protocols perspective), also makes some other neat things possible
(sharing LUTs from one display to the next, probably not that useful
but might be neat)
Question then remains can I use arrays for this or should I stick with
SHM buffers and if so what is the best way to share this between
compositor and client? (Like I do it now or is there a better way? Is
some other protocol already doing something like this I can copy?)
