No. I've tried this with 10.0.2 and 10.0.5 (our latest bug-fix release Weston 10).

Are you using the upstream Weston version or something like the NXP fork? I'd suggesting opening a gitlab issue if this with Weston upstream. Possibly this might be a display driver issues if I can't observe it on i915.
You could try disabling the animation entirely as a temporary work-around:
Under [shell] section add startup-animation=none.
