Check is a program for writing automated tests.  A check-based test
framework was recently added to XCB.  You can install check from
http://check.sourceforge.net/ , or if you run Debian, install the
package named "check".  If you don't have it, that would explain the
error you encountered.

Making this test framework optional is on the XCB todo list. :)
