Upon first glance, I can't help but wonder if this could be merged with
the HAVE_LAUNCHD implementation somehow.

Upon closer inspection, it's probably cleaner this way.

With the understanding that I haven't looked at the Solaris bits, and
only checked that my Linux box didn't explode:
