1st the versions:

automake (GNU automake) 1.11.1
autoconf (GNU Autoconf) 2.68
libtool (GNU libtool) 2.4

I also wasn't clear enough in my initial comment.   When I said that I was
following the X git master, that was for the xorg standard(?) files.  As such,
I had libxcb but not the util subdirectory of xcb checked out.  I needed to
build the util directory as it is a dependency for something else.   This was
my initial attempt at building it, with a fresh git clone.   The other parts of
xcb configure and install just fine.
