Version 3 of the patch

This patch contains a few small fixes beyond the v2 patch submitted earlier on
the mailing list. As explained on the mailing list, this patch adds a pair of
macros for generating atom storage structures and for generating initializer
functions for those structures. This solves a long-standing pain point with the
API.
