Updated developer documentation available for review

Hi all,

Now that the docs are on ReadTheDocs [1], I've spent a little while
updating them. The updated documentation is intended to go along with the
updated version of the website [2].

Before we do make the switch, it would be great if people could check the
documentation over - I'm sure that there will be odd mistakes that I've
missed.

Pull requests would be really welcome. You can also report issues [3].
