One problem is a confused clipboard stack (average users model of it).
Selections could be a very powerful and compelling feature for new users to X, 
however your mum will be confused that paste does not paste the last 
selection, and that middle click does not paste the last copy. They will feel 
dumb when they don't get it and will decide the feature is broken or weird 
and decide not to use selections which is a shame because it could be a 
powerful usability feature, but instead it's an easter egg.
