Well, freedesktop.org is about different parties doing stuff together -
arent all kinds of projects and organizations invited to participate?
The similar shapes was because everyone is doing a desktop-related
thing, that's the whole idea of freedesktop.org.
Plus just stuffing all kinds of stuff in the logo makes it only too
complicated and it looks too busy. The rounded squares are IMHO more
clean looking and thus better as a logo.
