This is actually a pretty common occurance with mice and keyboards, in
which there probably isn't much persistent data there.  Cameras, I'm not
sure.

It would be helpful to know how other systems (Mac OS X, Windows XP)
handle this.  My suspicion is that they probably don't keep any
persistent data around.
