Or better even, get umount to emit the request, and allow another daemon
(gnome-vfs-daemon, kde-whatever?) to handle responses from applications
indicating whether they are accessing documents on the media so that it
can pop up an informative dialog like "The open document
MyReportBackup.abw is located on media XYZ. [Cancel] [Save and Eject]"
(or apps may indicate there is no need to save, such as when a document
is unmodified or the media is read only) and the user can make an
informed decision as to whether to continue with the ejection. Other
apps like Nautilus/Konquerer would just close relevant windows on
unmount without asking, of course.
