What about adding mailto: irc: aim: to the mime specification.

You need to store somewhere which apps are able to handle these things.
And one should be the default.

I type irc:\\channel at server and xchat (or another app, depends on the
default) gets openend.

seems like gnome, mozilla and kde are all using different places to
store this information.

What about adding this info to MIME?
