Associating programs with file types

I ask this question every few months and have yet to get a satisfactory
answer, so I'll keep trying until I do ;)

Q: What are the plans for a standard mimetype->.desktop file association
mechanism, and how far are we from having something implemented?

Last time I checked KDE had a way that worked pretty well, which was just
adding some new fields to the .desktop files. Has this been considered for
adoption?
