I would think it would be cool to dump the not so nice api that is 
gnome-vfs for Gnome 3 and replace it with a nicer, simpler Dbus version 
(ditto for KDE 4?).

IMHO, there isnt really a good excuse for using propriety desktop 
specific modules any longer unless they need to be stricly tied to a 
platform's widget toolkit or constitute a unique feature of the platform 
in question.
