Automatically adjust margins

Hello

I didn't find an apropriate title for that: It's there a standardized
function for application to resize workspace margins in a window manager?

So when I start an instantmessaging client like psi, i want that the
workspace margins get adjusted, so that psi can always be open and when
i maximize another application it doesn't overlap psi
