Please keep in mind that this library is supposed to be used from file
choosers and stat() is the most frequent thing a file chooser is
doing.  I don't think it would be acceptable for a file-chooser to
block for a few seconds for each and every file it stat()s. But
perhaps I just misunderstood you.
