A common sessioning system (D-Session :p)

I don't know whether or not it has been discussed before. 

Is there a need for a common session system? So to replace the
gnome-session and kde-session applications with a common infrastructure.

Whats the current status and what are the ideas about this?

What would be the benefits and drawbacks?

Is it doable?
