A global window manager environment variable

It seems that it would be useful to have a globally-available preferred
window manager variable for people that don't like the default window
manager that their desktop environment provides.  Something like a NETWM
variable that, when set, specifies an alternate window manager to load,
perhaps.

It should be a trivial change in most DEs' startup scripts.  Does anyone
else think that this may be a good idea?
