I think the idea of using .desktop format is good. If there is a
conflict with .directory, perhaps it should be called .mount or
similar, but borrow the syntax of .desktop-files.
I read your libfusi web page. There you mention something you call
mountspec files. Are they doing what you ask about here? Can you tell
us more about them?
I also think the xattrs suggestion is good, technically. Probably it
will not be feasible until you can count on the file system of the
user's home directory having xattrs available. This seems to take its
time. My gut feeling is that we can never count on this unless it is
made a requirement in LSB, unfortunately...
