How about having the regular fallback sequence like X-Y-Z, X-Y, and if it 
didn't work try generic-Y-Z, generic-Y?

Of course it would be nice to fallback e.g. from spreadsheet to document first 
and only then try generic, but maybe this should be postponed till 2.0?
