No, they are in fact restricted simple types.

  <restriction>
    <enumeration>

XSD's type system is used by other XML grammars as well, so it can't be that 
bad. Whether it's an appropriate choice for Xesam is another question. At 
least it's not a simple system, and has many redundant constructs (e.g. 
simple lists).
