Shared wallets

Hello,

there are many password-protected operations which are accessed with different 
applications depending on the user's location, machine availability or 
context. It would give a better user experience if central password stores 
(wallets) were available to all of them.
The need to share wallet systems of different toolkits, desktops and 
applications has just been raised again for generic printer dialogues.

Are there people on this list who have implemented such systems in the past? 
What are the drawbacks of each, where are their strengths, which format 
should be settled on? This is not a "please make it so" plea, but I want to 
gather some information on why there hasn't been much progress since 2003 or 
so.
